Bonding And Temperature Control Of PVC Edge Banding

The bonding effectiveness between the edge banding, the substrate, and the hot-melt adhesive is contingent upon the quality of the adhesive backing. The adhesion between the substrate and the edge banding is subject to strict temperature requirements. Although the hot-melt adhesive within the edge banding machine is applied at high temperatures-typically ranging from 180°C to 200°C-the specific point of adhesion with the edge banding occurs after the adhesive has been roller-applied to the substrate and has traveled a distance of approximately 20 to 30 centimeters.

Due to lower workshop temperatures and rapid heat dissipation, the actual temperature at the bonding point often falls below 120°C, resulting in suboptimal adhesion. If, in addition, a low-quality adhesive backing is utilized, the likelihood of bond failure (delamination) increases significantly. To address this issue, it is essential to ensure that the ambient workshop temperature is maintained above 15°C and to install a temperature-controlled hood over the edge banding machine's application disc to preserve the ideal temperature required for effective bonding.
